Sexual Adjustment Process of Spouses with Spinal Cord Injuried Husbands

Abstract
|

|
The purpose of this study was to describe and understand how spouses with SCI husbands experienced sexual adjustment.
Data were gathered from May,1998 to September, 1998, using in-depth interview method and observation notes.
Data were gathered and analyzed at the same time using grounded theory method. 60 concepts were found and they were grouped into 30 subcategories and then into 15 categories.
The finding which emerged from the study were as follows ;
The major categories were ´shock´ ´distress´ ´perception of altered sexual capacity´ patience´ ´withdrawl´ ´thoughtful consideration´ ´surmounting´ ´passive adaptation´.
In this study, 3 types of sexual adjustment were explored. This study offers better understanding on sexual experiences and may facilitate more appropriate nursing intervention strategies to provide support, information and knowledge.
